Echinacea

The imperfect blossom
reaches out towards the fading sunlight
of twilight.
Heavy head of harmless spikes
and spotted petals;
delicate, bright colours which will
fade and decompose quickly
surrounds the hardy, black core.
Time is catching up to
the flower;
time that is most short and precious.
The echinacea slowly closes up its petals
and musters up the strength to open back up
the next day.
